Treat colon cancer before it spreads into other areas of your body

There are many treatments for colon cancer, some that are extremely common, and others that are very limited to special facilities. The right kind of treatment for you depends on the severity of your colon cancer, if you have had any type of cancer before, and if your family has a history of cancer.

As you may know, colon cancer can and will spread to other parts of your body if it is not treated correctly in due time. If you have caught your colon cancer in its early stages, then the treatment will not be so bad for you. But, you may have to look into more extreme options if your colon cancer has spread to multiple areas of your body, if you have already experienced cancer before, or if your family has a history of cancer.

Ordinarily the best treatment for colon cancer is surgery. During the surgery the doctors remove the abnormal cells or tumor, and then they may run additional test to ensure that they removed all abnormal cells. In most cases they also remove part of your colon, also known as your large intestine (which is about five to six feet long).

If they find they did not remove it all then you may have to also go through chemotherapy or radiation therapy. This would ensure that all the abnormal cells were removed, so that your cancer will not come back, and it will not spread to other areas of your body. Unfortunately, this does not guarantee that the cancer will not come back because once you have had it, you are much more prone to getting it again.

With that said, if you have had cancer previous to your recent diagnosis of colon cancer, then even if they do remove all of the abnormal cells and tumors with the surgery, you will still have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Another types of treatment that is not as popular, is biological therapy. Here, the doctors manipulate the body’s immune system in to fighting the cancer cells. Biological therapy is normally used after surgery to prevent the cancer from coming back. When using biological therapy you have to change your daily habits as well, such as your diet, and if you smoke, you must stop smoking. Smoking, obesity, and lack of exercise can all contribute to colon cancer as well.

There are a variety of clinics that offer their own types of unique treatment, but they are not as widely available. Laparoscopic surgery and colostomy-sparing surgery are additional surgeries that are available. While intraoperative radiation therapy can sometimes replace traditional radiation therapy. Also, for tumors that have spread out of the colon area alone, some clinics offer special treatments for those synchronous tumors.

The best way to determine the correct treatment for you as an individual is to talk to your doctor. See what your doctor recommends, and if you are not comfortable with it, then tell him your concerns and see if he can offer or recommend any other types of treatment for colon cancer.
