Both acrylic and gel can be used to create nail extensions. Building out extensions {length} is done with plastic tips or a form that the gel/acrylic is placed on, cured then removed. They also usually have a similar look, although gel tips may feel lighter they are also more flexible. It's mainly about the structure of the nail, but the real difference lies in the polymerization process, ease of removal, and density. The process of using gel is definitely quicker. There are no strong odors and you won’t have the hassle of much filing or dealing with large amounts of dust. With acrylic nails, you have to mix a liquid called monomer {strong odor} and a powder (polymer) to mold the artificial nail.ALERT!  some salons have manicurists upselling their gel extensions when they are using acrylic. They apply acrylic powder and liquid to your nails then put a gel top coat on and call the set gel. GEL comes in a pot is odorless and looks thick like honey; ACRYLIC is a powder and must be mixed with the smelly liquid to work. Know the difference.Acrylics are harder than gel, which means less flexibility. They also tend to be more damaging to the nail, especially as it requires more difficulty in removing it with soaking in acetone and buffing off. Too much buffing also means thinner nails over time.  The lifetime of gel tip extensions depends on how you use your hands—for some people, they'll last two weeks; for others, they'll last four to five. A fill every 3 to 4 weeks is best to take care of the natural nail growth.
